Coronavirus People Movement Index launched
The rapid spread of COVID-19 across the UK has resulted the imposition of lockdown conditions preventing normal patterns of movement behaviour across the UK.
These changes are minimising the normal shopper behaviour insight that PlaceDashboard provides to town centres, shopping centre and retail parks across the UK, so to fill the gap PlaceDashboard is publishing a weekly people movement indices for cities across the UK.
Commencing with heat maps for central London (with more cities to follow) PlaceDashboard is tracking the movement patterns of mobile phones across the UK, identifying how people are using streets, train stations, roads and open spaces. By measuring the movement speeds of phones between 3 and 10 miles per hour, PlaceDashboard is able to measure social distancing being undertaken by walkers and cyclists.
To reflect changes in movement, each movement map is assigned a value on Movement Index, with 100 being the people movement behaviour on Monday 23rd March 2020, the date of the social distancing lockdown announcement by the UK government.
In additon ot the PlaceDashboard Movement Index PlaceDashboard is publishing an interative city movement heat map.
